Use Your Test Scores to Earn Scholarships!

December 17, 2018 By Maisey Cooley

This time of year, high school students are particularly concerned with increasing their SAT/ACT scores to gain entry to their school of choice. Taking and retaking practice tests and real-life tests, they work hard to apply themselves and add points to their composite score for the highest possible outcome before they graduate. It is a common misconception, though, that a high SAT or ACT score will just gain you admission to your dream school– most students are not aware that your score could also help you achieve the scholarships you want!

Scholarship requirements vary based on school, donor, award amount, and criteria.

It is to your advantage to use your academic achievements (i.e. these test scores!) to earn your scholarships – because even if your family is financially able to support you through your undergraduate career, earning an undergraduate scholarship may enable them to save that money for your future graduate school career!

Students serious about earning scholarships should initially check directly with the school of their choice to see what their requirements are for test scores. For example, if you score anywhere from 23-28 on the ACT, you may be eligible for partial scholarships, dependent upon your school and their admissions requirements. However, if you score a 29 or above, your chances of being awarded a partial-to-full scholarship increase greatly – particularly when paired with a GPA of 3.5 or above. If you check the admissions requirements website for the school you want to attend, you may be able to find a scholarship estimator, or a list of test scores that typically result in scholarship awards.

If your GPA is on the higher end of the scale, but your test scores are not – do not fear. Colleges andUniversities take many elements into consideration when determining admissions decisions. If your GPA is high, but your test scores are not where you want them to be, you may still be eligible for a scholarship or even honors placement. It is always worth it to contact your admissions counselor and provide all pertinent information while applying to your top choice schools.
